Dr Haidar Ali was awarded for his charity work during the pandemic and for publishing free educational books

Dubai February 2021: Dr Haider Ali, Family Medicine Consultant at Medcare Hospitals & Medical Centres, has received a prestigious “Point Of Light Award” from British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson for publishing free education books.

His latest published book documents significant teachings on ‘skin of colour’, an area Dr Haider believes is lacking and has led to skin health inequality and racial bias in medical education, globally.

Medcare Hospitals & Medical Centres Group CEO, Dr Shanila Laiju proudly commented on Dr Haider’s achievement saying, “We are absolutely delighted for Dr Haider to have been recognized for his exemplary services.

We are passionate about working with medical practitioners who are committed to providing high-quality medical services and practices to the communities that they work in, and Dr Haider is just one of many talented doctors who are providing compassionate care at our facilities.

The fact that Dr Haider has chosen to associate himself with our hospital is just another example of why Medcare Hospitals & Medical Centres is considered amongst the best medical institutions in the region.”

Based on his own experiences as a medical student and practicing physician, Dr Haider spent a year creating a free educational book, along with 35 cases, that compare both white skin and darker skin tones in a variety of different skin conditions and cases.

He realized that some skin conditions are more common in patients from ethnic minority groups but there was very little research done on how to treat these specific cases.

He also realised that there was a need for a better understanding of the subject and more research on people with darker skin in order to better treat these conditions in the future.

When asked about why he felt that creating this book was so important, Dr Haider said, “I realized that a lot of the images I saw in my medical textbooks didn’t fit with how I looked and it wasn’t clear to me which condition I may or may not have been suffering with.

My extensive experience at medical school was instrumental to how I now think, and without sounding dramatic, I truly believe that it changed the way I practice, and that experience led me not only to developing my book, but more importantly, led to better clinical care from me as a doctor.”

Dr Haider was presented with the prestigious award for his work by Boris Johnson, Britain’s Prime Minister, and his book has been approved for use in Family Medicine Residency Programmes in England.

Dr Haider Ali works as Family Medicine Consultant at Medcare Medical Centres in both JBR and Dubai Marina.
